San Salvador continues to advance for the right to housing
Date
December 13, 2019On this day, the Ministry of Housing and three housing cooperatives sign contracts for financing, subsidy and transfer for their new properties in the historic center. This marks the beginning of the first stage of construction in which 109 low-income families will build their new homes through the model of housing cooperatives for mutual help.
“It has been an emotional day. We feel very happy, joy overflows our cooperative. After nine years of struggle, the objective has finally been achieved” says Esmeralda Aguilar from one of the housing cooperatives that soon will be built.
This project is divided in to four stages in which nine housing cooperatives will be built, benefiting a total of 352 families. The project is financed by the Italian government, and channeled through El Salvador’s newly established Ministry of Housing.
“For many people it has been more than ten years of struggle. Our partners, Fescovam and Fundasal, have not given up on their struggle for the human right to housing. Today we celebrate with them and all the families of the historical center” says Giovanni Magaña, Country Representative of We Effect in El Salvador.
