Background
The IMPACT Programme in Uganda is strengthening inclusive and sustainable agricultural value chains, particularly in coffee, vanilla, and cocoa, through collaboration with producer organisations, cooperatives, private sector actors, and other local stakeholders. As the programme expands implementation in target districts, there is a need for strong agronomic support to improve farmer productivity, crop quality, climate resilience, and the practical adoption of good agricultural practices. The role is situated within a programme team that works closely with partners to deliver technical assistance, support field-based learning, and ensure that programme interventions remain relevant, effective, and aligned with We Effect’s partnership approach.
Going forward, the programme will continue to strengthen partner capacity, improve extension and advisory services, promote climate-smart agriculture, and generate evidence for programme learning and adaptive management. The position therefore requires a candidate who can operate effectively in rural field settings, collaborate with diverse stakeholders, and contribute to technically sound and inclusive programme implementation. Strategic considerations include the need to support resilient farming systems, respond to production risks such as pests, disease, and climate shocks, and ensure that agronomic support reaches women, men, and young farmers in an equitable and non-discriminatory manner.
Position
The objective of this position is to provide agronomic and field-level technical support to the IMPACT Programme and its partners in order to improve productivity, quality, sustainability, and resilience in target agricultural value chains. The Programme Officer – Agronomist will support the effective delivery of programme activities by strengthening farmer training, extension approaches, and partner capacity in agronomic practices that are practical, market-oriented, and responsive to local farming realities.
The main areas of responsibility include providing technical guidance on good agricultural practices; supporting partners, extension staff, and producer groups on crop husbandry, soil health, pest and disease management, harvesting, and post-harvest handling; facilitating field demonstrations and farmer learning activities; contributing to planning, monitoring, and reporting of agronomy-related results; identifying technical risks and opportunities for adaptive management; and supporting knowledge sharing across partners and programme teams. The role also contributes to quality assurance and to the integration of inclusion, safeguarding, environmental sustainability, and responsible use of resources in programme implementation.
